Motive under investigation after fatal Nonthaburi school shooting

A 14-year-old student opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province on 7 August 2026, killing multiple people before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.

Authorities also linked the student to the earlier deaths of his grandparents at their home in the Bang Bua Thong area. The motive remains under investigation, including how he obtained the family’s 9mm handgun.

Gunfire was reported at the secondary school, in Bang Kruai district, between about 9.30am and 10am. Police, special operations units and rescue teams sealed the area, evacuated students and staff, and searched the buildings. Witnesses reported confusion at first, with some mistaking the shots for firecrackers.

Police recovered evidence that at least 26 rounds had been fired. The student was wearing a purple physical-education uniform when he was seen at the school, reports said.

Casualty figures varied during the day. Reports cited between about 15 and 22 people injured, including students, with some early statements saying two people were in critical condition and later health ministry figures reporting up to nine seriously injured. Some people were hurt while fleeing, and victims were taken to several nearby hospitals.

Multiple teachers were reported killed at the school, in addition to the student and his grandparents. Emergency responders treated injured people at the scene and performed CPR on at least one teacher.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul offered condolences, while education and other government agencies coordinated assistance and counselling for the school community. The investigation into the shooting and the firearm’s access is continuing.
