Seven French tourists were detained by Patong police on April 14 after obstructing traffic during Songkran celebrations on Prachanukhro Road near Malin Market in Phuket. Officers responded to complaints from local residents, intervened, and arrested the group for “causing annoyance to others,” police said.
Police Response and Clarifications
Authorities confirmed the suspects were handed over to investigators for legal proceedings. Patong police stated this incident was not connected to social media claims that foreign tourists sprayed water at officers stationed at Songkran service points.
Police addressed a separate viral video showing water thrown at a passing van, clarifying that no formal complaints had been filed as no victims had come forward. Following the arrests, officials issued warnings to local businesses and residents not to place water barrels or engage in water play on sidewalks or roadways if it obstructs traffic.
Patong police emphasized that stricter enforcement measures are in place to maintain public order and ensure safety during the festival.
