A German couple aged 64 and 63 died after being struck by a pickup truck at a zebra crossing in Khao Lak, Phang Nga, on 2 October.

The collision happened at about 9.30pm in Takua Pa district. Witnesses helped the injured tourists, who were taken to Andaman Hub Medical Centre, where they later died while receiving treatment.

According to witnesses, the pickup driver did not stop or assist the victims. CCTV footage reportedly showed the vehicle leaving the scene. The footage also reportedly showed the traffic light for vehicles turning red to allow pedestrians to cross.

Khao Lak police said the 37-year-old driver, identified as Weera, surrendered on 3 October. He told officers he had attended a medical appointment at Takua Pa Hospital and was driving home to Lam Kaen subdistrict in Mueang district when the crash occurred.

Weera reportedly said he saw the tourists standing on a traffic island but failed to notice the red light. He said he saw the next traffic light turn green and continued driving, and did not stop because he was in shock.

Police said alcohol and drug tests were negative. A blood sample was sent to Takua Pa Hospital for further testing, and the result was pending.

According to Channel 7, police initially charged Weera with reckless driving causing death, reckless driving in a manner that could endanger people or property, and failing to assist the victims or notify police after a road accident. The investigation is continuing.
