Phuket International Airport has responded to criticism after a promotional photo inside the terminal featured Singapore’s Peranakan Houses, not a local Phuket landmark, on 16 December 2027. The image, spotted by a foreign tourist who asked staff for its location, triggered online debate when it was revealed to show 287 Joo Chiat Road in Singapore, not Phuket. Airport officials stated the use of the Singaporean Sino-Portuguese architecture was intentional, not a mistake.

Airport’s Explanation and Public Reaction

Officials clarified that the photo was one of several images chosen to decorate the domestic terminal, aiming to showcase Sino-Portuguese architectural styles found both in Phuket and abroad. They acknowledged that the similarity in architectural design could cause confusion for visitors.

The airport apologized for any misunderstanding and said adjustments would be made to prevent further mix-ups. After the photo circulated online, Thai social media users expressed embarrassment and questioned why authentic Phuket buildings were not used instead.
