Phuket Authorities Tighten Oversight on Risky Tourist Behavior During Songkran

Phuket authorities have announced new measures to curb risky tourist behavior during Songkran after a series of incidents and safety concerns during the April 10–16, 2026 festival period. Deputy Governor Teerapong Chuaychoo chaired a review meeting where officials cited disruptive conduct, including the arrest of seven French nationals in Patong for obstructing traffic, as factors damaging the island’s reputation.

Songkran Incidents and Enforcement Response

Patong police confirmed the arrests after the group was found blocking Prachanukhro Road near Malin Market during celebrations. In a separate incident, two French nationals allegedly assaulted a Thai man at 3:30 p.m. after being asked to stop spraying water, resulting in visible injuries.

A local van driver described being repeatedly sprayed in the face and inside his vehicle by foreign tourists, highlighting tensions between visitors and residents. Officials also raised concerns about reckless driving, speeding in community areas, and disruptive gatherings that have increased the risk of road and marine accidents.

Road Safety Statistics and New Strategies

Authorities reported 32 accidents in Phuket during the Songkran control period, with 29 people hospitalized and five fatalities. Despite increased enforcement, these figures underscore ongoing safety challenges.

Officials agreed to implement stricter enforcement, clearer penalties, and AI-powered traffic cameras at intersections. Multilingual awareness campaigns will target both tourists and migrant workers. The province is urging hotels, tour operators, and vehicle rental businesses to proactively inform visitors of local regulations to prevent further incidents.
