Phuket backs women’s fund drive to strengthen grassroots economy

Phuket officials this week approved new Women’s Empowerment Fund support measures at a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall, aiming to expand women’s economic participation and strengthen the grassroots economy. Vice Governor Teeraphong Chuaychoo chaired the Provincial Subcommittee for the Management of the Women’s Empowerment Fund, with Phuket Provincial Development Officer Chaiwut Krutmas and agency representatives joining the review of fund performance and new proposals.

Grant approvals focus on jobs and vocational skills

The subcommittee approved grant proposals to promote vocational skills, support the formation of occupational groups and widen income-generating opportunities for women at community level.

Officials said the projects are intended to reduce inequality while strengthening the island’s grassroots economy in line with national policy.

Changes to the list of grant applicants were also reviewed to keep projects compliant with regulations and maintain continuity in delivery so communities receive the intended benefits.

Debt relief and membership growth reviewed

A separate agenda item covered debt relief measures for fund members, with the subcommittee examining steps meant to ease individual financial burdens and help borrowers return to career development programmes backed by the fund.

Officials said applications were assessed under strict criteria to ensure fairness and transparency.

The meeting also examined fund management, including budget disbursement, spending oversight and progress by the subcommittee secretariat.

Authorities reported steady progress in budget utilisation and broader access to funding, alongside continued growth in fund membership across Phuket communities.

Officials described the expanding network as an important mechanism for collaboration among women and for encouraging public participation in community development.

Phuket authorities reaffirmed their commitment to using the Women’s Empowerment Fund to create jobs, generate income and improve quality of life, with women positioned as a central force in sustainable local and national development.
