Phuket Confronts Mounting Waste Crisis, Launches Integrated Management Plan

Phuket has launched an integrated waste management plan as daily refuse volumes now exceed 1,000 tons, provincial officials announced on April 23. The surge, driven by urban expansion and tourism, prompted the Phuket Provincial Committee on Waste and Sewage Management to fast-track new strategies to protect the island’s environment and reputation.

New Waste Management Initiatives and Energy Projects

Deputy Governor Suwit Phansengiam chaired a committee review of landfill rehabilitation projects aimed at restoring and stabilizing existing disposal sites. Waste-to-energy programs were also prioritized, with plans to generate electricity from refuse and reduce landfill reliance.

Officials outlined a provincial waste management master plan to ensure long-term efficiency. The committee discussed producing Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) from non-recyclable waste, converting it into usable energy to further minimize landfill use.

Cluster-Based Systems and Fee Waivers

Cluster-based waste management among four municipalities is in development, allowing shared infrastructure and coordinated disposal operations. This approach is designed to streamline processes and improve capacity across the island.

The committee considered waiving disposal fees for Wichit Municipality for up to 15 tons of waste per day. Proposed savings would be redirected to public health programs for residents affected by waste-related pollution, pending further approval.
