UPDATE: Phuket court orders 30-day detention for 12-year-old Myanmar girl in school assault case

The Phuket Juvenile and Family Court has ordered a 12-year-old Myanmar girl held for 30 days while police investigate an alleged assault on a female student at a school in Phuket province.

According to The Phuket Express, the incident took place at Cherngtalay Wittayakom School in Thalang District and involved an injured 14-year-old Thai female student. The report said the victim's guardian filed a police complaint. Phuket Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom also directed local authorities to provide urgent support following the incident.

Police from Cherng Talay station formally notified the girl, aged 12 years and eight months, of the charge on 10 August 2026. The notification took place in the presence of a Phuket provincial prosecutor, a psychologist and a person the girl had requested to attend.

On 11 August, investigators brought the girl before the Phuket Juvenile and Family Court within the required 24-hour period. The court examined whether she fell within the legal definition of a child suspected of committing an offence and whether the charge notification and treatment of her had complied with the law.

During the hearing, investigators cited what they described as a possible serious danger to others and other grounds for detention. Those grounds included the dismissal of both the girl's parents from their jobs, according to the report.

The court ordered her held at the Phuket Juvenile Observation and Protection Centre during the investigation. If the investigation is not completed, police may ask the court to extend the detention for periods of up to 15 days, no more than twice, under the applicable procedure.

After the case reaches a final conclusion, authorities will send the girl to the Immigration Bureau for further consideration of her legal status in Thailand, the report said.

Because the accused is a child, details that could identify her have not been disclosed.
