Phuket court orders 30-day detention of 12-year-old Myanmar girl in school assault case

The Phuket Juvenile and Family Court has ordered a 12-year-old Myanmar girl held for 30 days while police investigate an alleged assault on a female student at a school in Phuket province.

Police from Cherng Talay station brought the girl, aged 12 years and eight months, before the court on 11 August 2026, within 24 hours of notifying her of the allegation. The proceedings followed the notification of charges on 10 August in the presence of a Phuket provincial prosecutor, a psychologist and a person the girl had requested to attend.

The court examined whether the girl fell within the legal definition of a child suspected of committing an offence and whether the charge notification and treatment of her had complied with the law.

During the hearing, investigators cited what they described as a possible serious danger to others and other grounds for detention, including the dismissal of both the girl’s parents from their jobs, according to the report.

The court ordered her held at the Phuket Juvenile Observation and Protection Centre during the investigation. If the investigation is not completed, police may ask the court to extend the detention for periods of up to 15 days, no more than twice, under the applicable procedure.

After the case reaches a final conclusion, authorities will send the girl to the Immigration Bureau for further consideration, the report said.

Because the accused is a child, details that could identify her have not been disclosed.
