Phuket crackdown widens with Bang Tao clearances, visa-free call, skywalk probe

Phuket authorities on May 4 expanded a crackdown highlighted in Phuket Xtra with fresh clearances on Bang Tao Beach, a parliamentary call to end visa-free entry and a corruption probe into the delayed Surin Beach Skywalk project. The roundup, published Monday, also pointed to separate enforcement and police cases elsewhere on the island.

Bang Tao action, visa policy push and project scrutiny

Beachfront businesses and structures were cleared from the sand at Bang Tao as officials widened an ongoing enforcement drive. The report linked that action to a broader push against illegal activity and encroachment along public beachfront areas.

In parliament, a Phuket MP urged an end to visa-free entry. That call appeared alongside a separate meeting in which the governor held talks with consuls to address bad tourist behaviour.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission office in Phuket is probing the delayed Surin Beach Skywalk project. The investigation focuses on the stalled public works scheme at Surin Beach.

Other cases featured in the May 4 roundup included a raid on a shooting range during nightlife checks in Bangla, a road-rage stabbing involving a motorbike rider in Koh Kaew and a police investigation into a fire at PPAO Hospital. The same package referenced a South African’s fatal fall from a condominium and the death of a man who fell from a building at Vachira Phuket Hospital.
