Phuket draft climate plan targets emissions cut of more than 3.2m tonnes
A draft 2026-2050 plan proposes 19 measures covering clean energy, electric vehicles, waste management and other sectors to support Phuket’s net-zero goal.
Phuket officials are considering a draft plan with 19 measures intended to cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent and support carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions by 2050.
The target was discussed at the third 2026 meeting of the Phuket Provincial Climate Change Steering Committee and the working group overseeing the province’s greenhouse gas reduction action plan at Phuket Provincial Hall on Tuesday, 8 September 2026.
The meeting was chaired by Natthaporn Rakbamrung, director of the Phuket Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment. Representatives from government agencies, the private sector and other organisations also attended.
The draft plan covers 2026-2050 and includes measures involving clean energy, electric vehicles, waste and wastewater management, the expansion of green spaces and environmentally friendly agriculture. The province estimates that, without emissions-reduction measures, Phuket’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2050 would be significantly higher than current levels.
The Academic Service Center of the National Institute of Development Administration, which is acting as the project consultant, presented a system for collecting and monitoring provincial greenhouse gas data. The system is intended to help agencies track emissions and measure the results of reduction efforts.
Officials also discussed business models based on the circular economy, particularly for waste generated by markets, communities and industrial operations. The approach focuses on reducing waste, using resources more efficiently and creating value from discarded materials.
Implementation of the provincial plan is expected to involve government agencies, businesses and the public.
