Phuket faces rough Andaman seas as TMD warns of heavy rain
Thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the southern west coast from 8 to 9 August, while seas from Phuket northwards could reach 2 to 3 metres and rise above 3 metres in storms.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has warned of heavy rain, flash floods and rough seas affecting Phuket and the Andaman coast during the 24-hour period from 6am on 8 August 2026 to 6am on 9 August.
Thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the southern west coast region, with heavy rain expected in parts of Ranong and Phang Nga. The forecast gives temperatures of 23–27°C to 31–35°C.
Southwesterly winds from Phuket northwards are expected to reach 20–40 kilometres per hour. Seas in the area will be 2–3 metres, rising above 3 metres in thundery conditions. From Krabi southwards, winds are forecast at 20–35 kilometres per hour, with seas around 2 metres and higher waves during storms.
TMD urged people in affected areas to watch for heavy to very heavy rain and accumulated rainfall that could trigger flash floods and forest run-off, especially on sloping ground, near waterways and in low-lying areas.
The department advised mariners to navigate cautiously and avoid thunderstorms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea have been told to remain ashore.
