Phuket fishing tour boat operators arrested in raid over alleged legal violations
Phuket authorities arrested operators of a fishing tour boat after intercepting the vessel near Dinso Cape and finding suspected licensing, tourism and satellite internet violations.
Operators of a fishing tour boat carrying Chinese tourists were arrested in Phuket after authorities said they found multiple suspected violations, including unauthorized satellite internet equipment and the absence of a licensed tour guide.
The Central Investigation Bureau, working with Phuket Marine Police, said authorities received reports on Monday, June 22, of a vessel offering fishing trips to foreign tourists in Phuket waters. At about 6:45 p.m., a patrol team intercepted the boat near Dinso Cape in Vichit.
Officials said two Chinese tourists and the boat’s Thai operator were on board.
During the inspection, officers found a Starlink satellite internet system on the vessel, including signal receivers, power supply units and routers. The operator said the equipment belonged to the company that hired him, but could not produce import or ownership documents, according to authorities. The devices were seized for further investigation.
Police also reported irregularities in the boat’s license and crew qualifications, leading to charges under the Navigation in Thai Waters Act. Authorities said the tourists were traveling without an accompanying licensed tour guide, which they described as a violation of Thailand’s tourism regulations.
Complaints have been filed against the tour company and evidence has been forwarded to the Department of Tourism for further action, officials said.
Investigators are also expanding their inquiry into the company’s business structure and sources of investment amid suspicions of nominee arrangements, in which Thai nationals may be holding shares on behalf of foreign investors to bypass legal restrictions.
Authorities said the operation was part of a wider crackdown aimed at maritime safety, tourist protection and compliance among tour operators in Phuket.
