Phuket forecast to see thunderstorms as Andaman waves reach 2 metres
Thunderstorms are forecast across 60% of the area around Phuket on 22 August, with waves rising above 2 metres in storm conditions.
Phuket is forecast to see thunderstorms on 22 August, with south-westerly winds bringing waves of 1 to 2 metres and higher waves in storm areas, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).
The forecast for the area puts temperatures at 25°C to 26°C overnight and 32°C to 33°C during the day. South-westerly winds are expected to reach 10 to 25 kilometres per hour, while winds from Phuket southward are forecast at 15 to 35 kilometres per hour.
Waves could rise above 2 metres where thunderstorms develop. The TMD advised sailors in the Andaman Sea to navigate cautiously and avoid thunderstorm zones. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea were advised to remain ashore for now.
The conditions are linked to a strengthening south-westerly monsoon over the Andaman Sea, alongside a monsoon trough extending across upper Laos towards a depression over Hainan Island, China. The TMD also warned of widespread thunderstorms and localised heavy rain elsewhere in Thailand, with a risk of flash floods, runoff and overflowing waterways in affected areas.
