Phuket governor orders tighter school safety after student assault
Officials have been ordered to support a 14-year-old student injured during a fight at Choeng Thale Wittayakom School and prevent a recurrence.
Phuket’s governor has ordered local authorities and education and child-protection officials to strengthen safety measures at Choeng Thale Wittayakom School after a 14-year-old girl was injured in an assault there.
The incident occurred at about 1.30pm on 5 August in Choeng Thale, Thalang district, after a report of a fight between students. Police from Choeng Thale station found six female students and youths involved. Initial information indicated that the incident stemmed from a conflict between student groups.
The injured student suffered bruising around her left eye and on her left arm, along with an abrasion on her left knee. She was examined at Thalang Hospital, while police recorded information and questioned people connected with the incident.
On 6 August, the girl’s mother filed a complaint with investigators seeking legal action against those responsible. Police are investigating and gathering evidence in accordance with the law.
The governor assigned the Thalang district chief, Phuket’s education authorities, the Phuket child and youth protection service and the school director to monitor the student’s welfare and provide assistance. The officials were also instructed to reassure parents, work with the school to address conflicts among students and take steps to prevent similar incidents.
Phuket authorities said they would coordinate across administrative, education and child-protection agencies to safeguard students’ rights and welfare while the case proceeds.
