Phuket maritime activity faces rough-sea warning from September 23–27
The Thai Meteorological Department has warned of rough seas in the upper Andaman Sea and advised small boats to remain ashore during a five-day period of heavy rain.
The Thai Meteorological Department has advised small boats in the upper Andaman Sea to remain ashore from September 23–27, as heavy to very heavy rain is forecast across much of Thailand, including areas affecting Phuket’s maritime activity.
The TMD said waves in the upper Andaman Sea are expected to reach about 2 metres during the warning period and rise above 2 metres in thunderstorms. Mariners have been urged to navigate cautiously and avoid areas experiencing thunderstorms.
The department issued its third warning on Tuesday, September 22, forecasting heavy to very heavy rain across Thailand from September 23–27. It said a strong low-pressure area near the coast of central Vietnam would move across the lower Northeast, East and Central regions, while the southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand strengthens.
The TMD also warned that persistent rain and accumulated rainfall could cause flash floods and run-off, particularly on foothill slopes near waterways and in low-lying areas. Bangkok and surrounding provinces are forecast to receive very heavy rain from September 24–26.
