Phuket marks National Mother’s Day with public holiday and library activities
Government offices in Phuket are closed on 12 August, while local libraries held workshops and card-making activities ahead of Thailand’s National Mother’s Day.
Government offices across Phuket are closed on Wednesday, 12 August, as Thailand marks National Mother’s Day and the birthday anniversary of the Queen Mother. Banks and private businesses are operating according to their own holiday schedules.
The annual public holiday was reaffirmed in a July 2026 Royal Decree issued by King Maha Vajiralongkorn. The date has taken on renewed significance following the Queen Mother’s death on 24 October 2025 at the age of 93.
In Phuket, the 50th Birthday Anniversary Commemorative Library in Kathu held a jasmine-flower workshop on 10 August, with 28 participants making flowers to give to their mothers. The 50th Birthday Anniversary Commemorative Library, Austria-Phuket Unity Center, held a card-making activity attended by 32 participants.
The activities were designed to encourage creativity and strengthen family relationships. Jasmine flowers are a traditional symbol of Mother’s Day in Thailand, where schools, government agencies and communities commonly hold activities honouring mothers and families.
The Queen Mother, born Sirikit Kitiyakara in Bangkok on 12 August 1932, served as Queen Consort during the reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Her public work included support for rural livelihoods, Thai handicrafts and textiles, humanitarian assistance, public health, environmental conservation and the preservation of Thai cultural heritage.
