Phuket City Municipality is set to reopen its central landfill for waste disposal from local administrative organizations and government agencies on April 18, following a temporary shutdown after a landfill fire. Mayor Supachok La-ongpetch led an inspection of the site to confirm operational readiness and enforce strict waste disposal rules across Phuket.
Temporary Waste Delivery Suspension and Fire Response
Municipal officials requested all local administrative organizations and private operators to suspend solid waste deliveries to the Phuket Provincial Waste Disposal Center from April 11 to 19, after a fire erupted at the landfill near Saphan Hin. The province declared an emergency assistance zone as crews worked to control the blaze, which burned for two consecutive days.
If no smoke is detected at the landfill on April 18, disaster prevention teams will be withdrawn. Monitoring responsibilities will then shift to PJT Technology Co., Ltd., which has supplied staff and water trucks for ongoing fire watch.
New Disposal Protocols and Site Management
To reduce congestion and maintain order, the municipality has mapped out specific traffic routes for garbage trucks entering the landfill. Red flag markers now indicate designated waste drop-off points, and all vehicles are required to unload only at these marked areas.
Operating hours for the landfill are set from 06:00 to 18:00 daily, starting April 18. Authorities have instructed all participating agencies to adhere strictly to the updated disposal guidelines to ensure efficient and safe landfill operations.
