UPDATE: Phuket MP cites possible mule-account link in Thalang checkpoint investigation
A Phuket MP has raised a possible mule-bank-account link in the investigation into alleged money demands at a Thalang checkpoint; the accused territorial defence volunteers remain off duty.
Phuket authorities have ordered an investigation into allegations that territorial defence volunteers demanded money from people at a drug checkpoint in Thalang district, with the accused personnel removed from duty while the inquiry proceeds.
On 20 September 2026, a deputy government spokesperson said the deputy interior minister had instructed the Phuket governor and Thalang district chief to establish the facts and report publicly. If the allegations are substantiated, legal and disciplinary action should be pursued without exception, the spokesperson said.
Phuket MP Chalermphong Saengdee has said there is also a possible mule-bank-account link in the case. He said information indicated that, in some instances, money allegedly connected with the checkpoint was transferred to an account identified as a mule account linked to a Thalang district territorial-defence volunteer. The account holder and any ultimate beneficiaries have not been independently established.
Saengdee urged authorities to trace the financial trail, including who owned or used the account, the timing and amounts of transfers, any onward transfers or withdrawals, and possible links to officials or others involved. He said the investigation should go beyond replacing personnel and identify anyone who ordered the alleged payments or benefited from them.
The governor has appointed two replacement units, totalling about 30 personnel, to maintain public order and safety while the investigation continues. Officials have questioned people connected with the complaint and other witnesses, while statements from the alleged victims are still being collected.
The authorities said the investigation would be based on facts, evidence and due process. Territorial defence volunteers are assigned to assist administrative or police officials with maintaining public order and protecting residents, rather than seeking personal gain, the spokesperson said.
