Phuket orders shooting-range inspections after fatal incident

Phuket Governor Chotinrin Kerdsum has ordered inspections of shooting ranges across the province following the reported apparent suicide of a 36-year-old man at a range in Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi.

On 18 August 2026, Vice Governor Khetarat Chansilp was assigned to oversee the inspections with administrative officials, district chiefs, police and local administrative organisations. Officials were told to ensure operators comply with laws governing firearms and ammunition.

Firearms rented or used at ranges must be properly registered, with documents showing their origin and ownership. Operators must keep ammunition within authorised quantities and maintain records of ammunition issued and used so inventories can be checked and misuse or removal to other locations can be prevented.

The Phuket officials said the ranges inspected were operating lawfully and had the necessary documents and licences. Operators and staff were nevertheless reminded to follow all licence conditions, maintain strict controls over firearms and ammunition, and monitor users for signs that they might harm themselves or others. Authorities must be contacted when necessary to protect public safety.

The Phuket Provincial Office said inspections would continue, with district authorities required to report their findings and ensure firearms and ammunition are possessed, stored and used in accordance with the law.
