Phuket plans Red Cross mobile eye surgery clinic for May 17-22

Phuket officials are preparing for the Thai Red Cross Mobile Ophthalmic Surgery Clinic, which will operate in Phuket from May 17-22 under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn chaired a planning meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall on May 5 to review readiness for the free eye care programme.

The clinic will offer eye examinations and surgery for monks, nuns, religious figures of all faiths and underprivileged people. Officials said the outreach model is designed to bring ophthalmologists, mobile surgical units and modern equipment directly into the community.

Surgery schedule sets out exams, pterygium cases and major procedures

May 17 is reserved for site preparation and installation of medical systems.

Outpatient examinations will start at 6:30am on May 18, with pterygium surgeries scheduled for the afternoon.

From May 19 through May 21, medical teams will perform cataract removal, glaucoma treatment, eyelid surgery and operations for lacrimal duct obstruction.

Post-operative follow-up examinations are scheduled for May 22, when treatment records will also be transferred to local health authorities for continued care.

Agencies told to speed patient screening and site logistics

The meeting included Phuket Red Cross Society President Kusumal Pongsitthaworn, Phuket Provincial Palad Rungruang Thimabut and representatives from relevant government agencies.

Officials reviewed advance screening and registration, the setup of operating and recovery areas, and deployment of medical staff and volunteers.

Planning also covered supplies of equipment, medicines, food and drinking water, along with transport coordination and electrical systems at the site.

Governor Nirat directed agencies to step up public awareness efforts and survey eligible patients, with emphasis on vulnerable groups so the services reach those most in need.
