Phuket City Police arrested two Thai suspects and seized 20,000 methamphetamine pills after staking out a suspicious roadside parcel and following the pair to a rented house in Phuket Town.
Police in Phuket seized 20,000 methamphetamine pills and arrested two suspects after intercepting a suspicious parcel left by the roadside, according to Phuket City Police.
Investigators launched a covert surveillance operation on June 27 after receiving reports of an abandoned package in Mueang Phuket district. Officers watched a man and a woman arrive to collect the parcel, then followed them to an unnumbered rented house in the Komarapaj community in Phuket Town's Talad Yai subdistrict before moving in to detain them.
The suspects were identified as Kanjan, 30, and Mimi, 25, both Thai nationals. Police took them into custody at the rented house.
A search of the property found the parcel hidden in a bedroom. Inside were 20,000 methamphetamine tablets, also known as ya bah, concealed in bags within the package.
During questioning, the two denied owning the drugs. They told police they had been hired to collect and temporarily store the parcel until they received further instructions from the network's ringleader, and said they were paid between 500 and 1,000 baht for each delivery.
Police said they did not believe the explanation because of the quantity of drugs found in the room.
Both suspects were charged with jointly possessing a Category 1 narcotic, methamphetamine, with intent to distribute. They were handed over to investigators for legal action as authorities continue expanding the case to identify and arrest others behind the trafficking network operating in Phuket.
