Phuket Reports Total of 23 Accidents in Five Days of Songkran Seven Days of Danger Road Campaign

Phuket recorded 23 road accidents, 19 injuries, and four deaths over the first five days of the Songkran Seven Days of Danger road safety campaign, officials confirmed on April 15. The campaign, which began April 10, is part of a nationwide effort to reduce accidents during Thailand’s peak holiday travel period. On April 14, the fifth day, two men—a Thai national and a German—were hospitalized after separate accidents, but no fatalities occurred in Phuket that day.

Accident Locations and Victim Demographics

Thirteen of the 23 reported accidents took place in Phuket City, with eight in Kathu district and two in Thalang, according to provincial data. Among the 19 injured were 14 men and five women, including nine Thai nationals, three from Myanmar, two Russians, two from the UK, and one each from Turkey, France, and Germany.

All four fatalities recorded by April 13 involved Thai nationals—three men and one woman.

Targeted Safety Campaigns for Migrant Workers

Officials stated that earlier in the year, most road casualties during the New Year holiday were Myanmar migrant workers. In response, Phuket authorities launched outreach initiatives in worker camps ahead of Songkran, focusing on helmet use and discouraging drunk driving.

Police and administrative officers led these efforts, which officials credit with a marked reduction in accidents and fatalities among migrant workers during the Songkran period.
