Phuket school opens low-carbon learning centre

Chalermprakiat Somdej Phra Srinakarin School in Phuket opened a Low Carbon Learning Centre on 25 August 2026, with more than 400 government officials, private-sector representatives, teachers, parents and students attending the ceremony.

The centre provides learning and knowledge exchange on climate-change adaptation, greenhouse-gas reduction and sustainable environmental management. It supports Phuket’s development strategy and Smart City goals through 12 learning stations covering crab releases, digital tree mapping, a seedling bank, youth environmental innovation, zero-waste practices, recycling, bio-composting, organic farming and sustainable ecotourism.

The activities are designed to give students practical experience in managing natural resources and the environment. The school is being used as a model for environmental management, combining environmental education with resource conservation, clean energy, waste management and student-developed products and innovations.

The school won first prize in the national Low Carbon School Project competition in the Group B secondary school category in 2025 and received a royal trophy from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. It was subsequently developed into a learning centre to share its experience with other schools, communities and local areas.

Komes Phutthasorn, deputy director-general of the Department of Climate Change and Environment, officially opened the centre. The ceremony also included the presentation of a B20,000 grant and supporting materials for a separate Low Carbon School learning centre in Nakhon Sri Thammarat Province.

The Department of Climate Change and Environment said its Low Carbon Community and Low Carbon School projects aim to establish similar centres nationwide and encourage environmentally friendly production and consumption practices.
