Phuket’s “Live Like a Local” brand is transforming discarded fishing nets and marine debris into fashion and souvenir products, officials announced at the April provincial administrative meeting at City Hall. The initiative spotlights the circular economy and sustainable tourism by converting ocean waste into premium items that reflect Phuket’s cultural identity.

Community Innovation Drives Environmental and Economic Gains

Deputy Governor Teerapong Chuaychu highlighted the project’s success in repurposing “ghost nets”—abandoned fishing gear that threatens marine ecosystems—into practical bags and souvenirs. The collection blends traditional weaving techniques with modern design and local batik fabrics.

More than 2,000 kilograms of ocean waste have been removed and upcycled through this initiative. Officials said the project also provides sustainable income for local communities, supporting Phuket’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) policies.

Live Like a Local is being positioned as an example of Thailand’s soft power, offering handcrafted and eco-friendly products that appeal to global consumers while preserving local heritage. Details about the initiative are available on the brand’s Facebook page, and products will be featured at upcoming tourism events in Phuket.
