Phuket singer Nene Royal performs in America’s Got Talent final

Phuket singer Nene Royal performed The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” in the America’s Got Talent Season 21 finale in Pasadena, California, on Wednesday, 23 September.

Royal, whose real name is Rattikarn “Praew” Amlai, sang while playing guitar, displaying her vocals and rock stage presence before a global audience. The performance was broadcast in Thailand on TrueVisions.

After the performance, AGT judge Howie Mandel said: “Give her the $1 million now, America.”

Teachers and schoolmates at Kajonkiet International School Phuket gathered for a special screening of the final at the school, cheering as Royal took the stage in the United States. Supporters across Thailand and elsewhere also voiced their support online.

Royal reached the finale after receiving a Live Golden Buzzer from judge Mel B during the quarterfinals for her performance of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun”. Her earlier performances included The Cranberries’ “Zombie” at the audition stage and Muse’s “Hysteria” during the Judges’ Callbacks.

Before the final, Royal said she was “the most ready in the universe” after completing rehearsals. She travelled to the United States with her family, team and members of Phuket band OZONE.

The Thai government also urged people to support Royal. Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploytalay Laksameesaengjan said her appearance provided an opportunity to showcase Thai talent internationally.

The AGT winner will be decided by audience voting, with the result due after the final. Voting closes at 7am Eastern Time, or 4am Pacific Time, in the United States, equivalent to 6pm Thailand time on 23 September. Under AGT rules, only people in the United States can vote.
