Phuket suspends waste acceptance indefinitely as landfill reaches seventh crisis
Phuket City Municipality has stopped accepting waste until further notice after its landfill exceeded capacity and several trucks dumped rubbish on the access road.
Phuket City Municipality has suspended waste acceptance until further notice after its waste-disposal centre exceeded the capacity of its landfill area, in what officials described as the site’s seventh crisis.
The suspension began on 8 November 2026 and applies to waste brought by relevant government agencies and contractors. Phuket City Mayor Supachok La-ongphet said the municipality was urgently hiring additional machinery to reshape the site and create space for further waste disposal.
Trucks had faced longer-than-usual waiting times over the previous week. On the morning of 8 November, several trucks reportedly left the queue and dumped waste on the road leading to the landfill, blocking other vehicles from reaching the disposal area and disrupting operations at the centre.
The municipality said it would use the suspension period to improve the site and coordinate with all local administrative organisations and contractors involved in bringing waste to the facility. Waste acceptance will resume once the area has been restored to normal conditions and the relevant parties have been briefed on the required management procedures.
