Phuket — Authorities in Phuket are stepping up efforts to manage stray dogs through a structured shelter program, wanting to safeguard public health and enhance the province’s image as a responsible tourism destination…
Phuket authorities are moving forward with plans to upgrade the province’s stray dog shelter, aiming to create rabies-free zones and improve public health. At a recent meeting at the Provincial Livestock Office, officials outlined new funding proposals and management strategies to address the stray animal population, citing the need to protect Phuket’s reputation as a responsible tourism destination.
Shelter Funding and Long-Term Management
Reports to the committee revealed that 269 dogs were admitted to the shelter during fiscal year 2025, covering October 2024 through September 2025.
For fiscal year 2026, the shelter requested 5,029,610 baht in funding, with 1,398,480 baht already allocated. The fiscal year 2027 plan earmarks 5,001,230 baht to care for an estimated 1,004 dogs.
Officials said future budgets should include not only food and housing, but also veterinary supplies and medical treatment. They called on local administrative organizations to provide consistent support and encouraged public donations to help sustain shelter operations.
The program covers intake, transport, feeding, and medical care for stray dogs, with the stated goal of establishing rabies-free zones throughout Phuket.
