Phuket trains 64 representatives in waste management
A Phuket training programme brought together 64 representatives from government, business, academia and community groups to improve cooperation on waste and environmental management.
Phuket trained 64 representatives from government, private-sector, academic and community organisations in waste and environmental management on Wednesday, 30 September, as the province responds to rising waste volumes.
The capacity-building programme was held at the Phuket Merlin Hotel in Phuket Town, with Vice Governor Suwit Phansengiam presiding on behalf of Governor Chotinarin Kerdsom. Suwit said Phuket’s status as a major tourism destination had contributed to continued growth in the amount of waste generated across the province.
He said cooperation among government agencies and other sectors was continuing, but that the increasing volume of waste remained a challenge as the local economy expanded.
Organised by the Phuket Provincial Local Administration Office, the programme provided a forum for participants to exchange information and approaches to waste and environmental management. It was also intended to strengthen cooperation and help participants share the knowledge gained with their organisations and communities.
Participants included environmental network partners from the academic, public and private sectors, relevant agencies and local environmental volunteer groups.
Phuket also highlighted recent achievements in the field. The province placed third in the Ministry of Interior’s 2026 Clean Province municipal solid waste management contest. Environmental volunteers affiliated with Wichit Municipality and Cherng Talay Subdistrict Administrative Organisation also received national outstanding volunteer awards in 2026.
