Phuket’s Por Tor Festival opens with parade in Phuket City

Phuket’s annual Por Tor (Hungry Ghost) Festival opened in Phuket City on 31 August with a parade from Dragon Square to Bang Neaw Shrine.

Phuket Deputy Governor Romdon Hayiawa presided over the opening ceremony at 5.30pm at Por Tor Kong Bang Neaw. The event was held at Queen Sirikit 72nd Birthday Park, known locally as Dragon Square, on Thalang Road.

The parade travelled from Dragon Square along Phuket Road towards the shrine and was greeted by crowds along the route.

Romdon said the festival expresses gratitude to ancestors and benefactors, reinforces respect for heritage and family ties, and brings together people from different communities. He also said it helps younger generations maintain their cultural roots.

The festival runs at Bang Neaw Shrine from 31 August to 10 September, featuring parades, rituals and community activities. Phuket City Municipality has invited residents and tourists to attend.
