Wichit police found 12 people under the age of 18 and took nine motorcycles for inspection during a late-night operation at Laem Din So viewpoint in Phuket on 11 October.
Officers from Wichit Police Station, supported by Phuket’s Special Operations Unit (SWAT), carried out the inspection at about 2.30am after reports of youths gathering, causing a public nuisance while riding motorcycles and possibly taking part in illegal street racing.
The operation was directed by Wichit Police Chief Pol Col Somsak Thongkliang. Police said investigators were collecting evidence to determine whether any motorcycles had been driven recklessly or used in illegal street racing. If confirmed, additional charges could follow and proceedings could be initiated to confiscate the vehicles.
Parents or guardians were summoned and briefed on the relevant legal provisions and proceedings under Sections 26(3) and 78 of the Child Protection Act.
The operation formed part of wider efforts by Wichit administrative officials to monitor youth gathering places and vehicle-related disturbances during the Vegetarian Festival.
On 9 October, an 18-member administrative team inspected six locations in Wichit, including Saphan Hin, Ao Yon Beach, Khlong Mudong and Laem Din So. Officials checked 16 people and nine motorcycles, identifying four motorcycles with modified, excessively loud exhausts. Photographs and owner details were sent to Wichit Police Station for further action.
Officials also seized one e-cigarette and a quantity of firecrackers and fireworks. They said patrols would continue at high-risk locations, tourist attractions and youth gathering spots during the festival period.
