Police officer’s mother dies after gun discharges in Koh Kaew

A 49-year-old woman died after being shot in the head by a 9mm round from a service-issued Glock 19 being handled by her son, a police officer, at a house in Koh Kaew, Phuket, on Sept 24, 2026.

The shooting was reported to Phuket City Police Station at about 9:20pm at a house on Koh Kaew Soi 3 in Moo 1. Responders found Sorathatsaratsami Phakdiyaburi unconscious and without a pulse, with a single gunshot wound to the centre of her head.

Rescuers performed CPR before taking her to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

The woman’s son, Pol L/Cpl Chonthee Chanjaem, a squad leader with the Crowd Control Unit of the Special Operations Division, Investigation Division, Provincial Police Region 8, told officers he had been handling his service-issued Glock 19 when it discharged.

According to the police report, Chonthee said a 9mm round had remained in the chamber while he was manipulating the pistol’s slide, resulting in the accidental discharge.

Forensic officers examined the scene and collected evidence. Police also examined the firearm and conducted a gunpowder-residue examination on the officer. Chonthee and the Glock 19 were taken to Phuket City Police Station for detailed questioning and further legal proceedings, police reported.
