Police step up Bang Wad Dam patrols after jogging assault

Kathu Police are increasing patrols at Bang Wad Dam after a woman was attacked while jogging on Sept 17, with authorities also discussing improved lighting and additional CCTV at the popular exercise area.

The woman was exercising shortly after 7pm when a man allegedly emerged from woodland and attacked her, according to Adisak ‘James’ Khaoraksa, 38, who intervened after hearing calls for help. Adisak said the woman told him that the attacker punched her in the stomach, scratched her face and attempted to sexually assault her.

The alleged attacker fled on a motorcycle after the woman screamed and apparently noticed another person nearby, Adisak said. He helped her reach a safe location and warned other women who were still exercising at the dam. The woman later filed a formal complaint with Kathu Police.

Kathu Police Chief Pol Col Chalermchai Hernsawat has ordered officers to expedite the investigation and assigned Deputy Investigation Chief Pol Lt Col Ratsada Kluengwong to monitor the case, according to MP Chalermpong Saengdee. After a Sept 21 meeting with the victim, police and the Phuket Provincial Justice Office, Chalermpong said officers had identified a suspect and were gathering evidence while taking steps towards an arrest.

Police also accompanied the woman to the site to identify the exact location of the attack. The Phuket Provincial Justice Office is preparing assistance, including access to rights and support under its procedures.

Pol Col Chalermchai said officers already patrol the dam, particularly during peak exercise times around 6pm, and drive along the running routes rather than staying in fixed positions. He said patrols would be stepped up.

Police have discussed lighting along the dam crest, perimeter and running paths with the newly appointed dam director. They are also discussing additional CCTV cameras with Kathu Town Municipality, which is considering a budget for the work.

Chalermpong said the roughly 6-kilometre exercise route needed stronger safety measures, including lighting, CCTV, route maintenance and traffic management. He also called for automated external defibrillators to be installed and said he would seek budget support for improvements, including landscaping and public facilities.

Police plan to discuss the dam’s evening operating hours and restrictions on vehicle access with the director of the Phuket Irrigation Office.
