Rain eases in upper Thailand as heat intensifies; heavier showers forecast south — confirmed details at this stage for Phuket readers.

Rain eases in upper Thailand as heat intensifies; heavier showers forecast south

Thailand’s Meteorological Department said on May 6 that rain will decrease across upper Thailand over the next 24 hours, while daytime heat will intensify and some northern and central areas will see extreme heat. In Phuket and the wider South, rain is expected to increase, with heavy falls in some places as easterly winds cover the Gulf of Thailand and southern regions.

The forecast runs from 6am today to 6am tomorrow. Officials said upper Thailand could still see isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds as a weakening high-pressure system or cool air mass from China loses strength, while southerly and southeasterly winds continue bringing moisture from the Gulf and the South China Sea.

Phuket west coast among southern areas facing heavier rain

On the Andaman side, Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun are forecast to get thunderstorms across 40% of the area, with heavy rain in some locations. Temperatures are expected at 24-26C overnight and 33-36C during the day, with easterly winds at 10-30 kph.

Wave height in the Andaman Sea is forecast at below 1 meter, rising to more than 2 meters in thundershowers. In the Gulf of Thailand and on the South’s east coast, waves are expected around 1 meter and above 2 meters in storm areas, where rain coverage is also forecast at 40% with temperatures of 23-25C to 31-37C.

Elsewhere, storm coverage is forecast at 20% in the North, Northeast and Central Plain, and 30% in the East and greater Bangkok. Dust and haze accumulation over upper Thailand remains at slight to moderate levels because some areas are still receiving rain.
