Russian Woman Dies After Rescue From Water Off Nai Yang Beach
Sakhu Police were notified of the incident at Nai Yang Beach at about 1:20pm, after local residents reported that a foreign woman was drowning offshore.
A Russian woman died after being pulled from the sea off Nai Yang Beach in Phuket on Monday, May 18. Doctors at Thalang Hospital pronounced her dead at 2:34pm after rescuers brought her ashore and provided emergency treatment, police said.
The incident began with a report to Sakhu Police that a foreign woman was drowning offshore. Authorities are withholding her name pending confirmation that her family has been notified.
Rescue response began after beachgoers raised the alarm
Sakhu Police received notice of the emergency at about 1:20pm after local residents reported the woman in trouble in the water.
Pol Lt Col Kittisak Sommat, an investigating officer at Sakhu Police Station, coordinated with rescue workers, informed Sakhu Police Superintendent Pol Col Salan Santisasanakul and went to the beach.
According to police, a good Samaritan saw the woman struggling at about 1:37pm and helped bring her back to shore before emergency responders arrived.
Rescue workers from the Sakhu Tambon Administrative Organisation provided medical aid on the beach before taking her to Thalang Hospital.
Police opened a death investigation after the hospital notification
Thalang Police were informed of the death at about 3:20pm. Pol Lt Theerawat Chupong, deputy investigating inspector at Thalang Police Station, was assigned to the case.
Police and hospital staff then carried out a preliminary examination of the body in the hospital emergency room.
Authorities arranged for the body to be transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital.
Police said the Russian Embassy, the Immigration Bureau and Border Patrol Police would be notified in line with procedure.
The case remains under investigation.
