Speedboat destroyed in Makham Bay fire off Phuket

A speedboat was destroyed by fire in Makham Bay, Phuket, at about 5:25 p.m. on May 11 after flames broke out while the vessel was anchored off Wichit, police said. The boat was moored about 200 meters offshore in Mueang District, and no injuries were reported because nobody was on board.

The vessel had earlier returned from Phi Phi Island after dropping off tourists. Police said the captain and crew had shut down all systems and disembarked before the fire was spotted.

Firefighters contain blaze as investigators examine cause

Firefighting boats reached the scene and found the speedboat fully engulfed. Firefighters took about 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

By that point, the fiberglass hull had been almost completely consumed, leaving only a charred frame floating on the water. Police said the Forensic Police Division is working with Wichit Police to determine what caused the fire.

Damage assessment is also underway with the vessel’s owner. Wichit Police confirmed again that no casualties occurred.
