Thai MP calls for action over Israeli community on Koh Phangan

Thai MP Chris Potranan on May 6, 2026 urged government action over the Israeli community on Koh Phangan, saying in Parliament that weak oversight could create security and sovereignty risks. The Economic Party leader said the issue matters beyond Koh Phangan and Phuket, estimating about 7,000 Israelis are on the island, including roughly 4,000 long-term residents on extended visas or involved in business activity and another 3,000 tourists.

Parliament warning cites neutrality and security risks

Potranan said his remarks were not directed at ethnicity, but at risks tied to a large concentrated foreign population from a country involved in active regional conflict. He argued that Israel’s tensions with Iran could expose Thailand to security threats or undermine the country’s neutral position.

He also questioned Thailand’s visa-free entry policy for Israelis, saying it allowed entry without sufficient screening. He said that could open the way for criminals or other undesirable figures to enter.

Complaints focus on businesses, payments and enforcement

The MP pointed to reports of Israeli-run hotels, schools and informal shopping areas, with critics alleging some operate outside Thai regulations. He said some transactions were being handled through Israeli payment applications rather than the local economy.

Complaints on Koh Phangan have also included noise from parties, alleged drug use and wider environmental and cultural impacts. Potranan called on the Internal Security Operations Command, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to investigate and tighten law enforcement.

He also referred to Chabad centers, Jewish outreach facilities used for religious activities, as possible targets that could increase vulnerabilities. Thai authorities have already raided unlicensed schools and businesses on the island, including a recent operation that found dozens of Israeli children at an improperly licensed facility.
