Thailand braces for heavier rain; Phuket among provinces facing downpours

The Meteorological Department said on May 8 that heavier rain will spread across Thailand over the next 24 hours, with Phuket among southern provinces facing thunderstorms and possible heavy to very heavy falls. Upper Thailand is forecast to see more storms, gusty winds and isolated heavy rain, with officials warning of flash flooding and runoff as a new high-pressure system pushes south and moist winds feed unstable weather.

Phuket forecast and nationwide weather risks

For Phuket and the South’s west coast, thunderstorms are forecast in 60% of the area, with heavy to very heavy rain possible in Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun. Temperatures are forecast at 24-26C overnight and 33-35C by day, with easterly winds at 10-30 kilometers per hour.

Wave heights in the Andaman Sea are expected to stay below 1 meter, but rise above 2 meters in thundershowers. In the Gulf of Thailand and the wider Andaman, waves are generally about 1 meter, and mariners were advised to use extra caution and avoid storm areas.

Elsewhere, storm coverage is forecast at 60% in the North, Northeast, East, the South’s east coast, and Greater Bangkok, while the Central Plains are forecast at 40%. The hottest conditions are expected in the North at 34-40C, and dust and haze in upper Thailand were rated slight to moderate because of rainfall in some areas.
