Thailand-China robotic surgery a first

Thailand and China completed their first cross-border robotic surgery on April 23, linking Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital in Bangkok with West China Hospital in Chengdu, over 2,000 kilometres apart, according to the Bangkok Post. During the procedure, a patient in Bangkok underwent robotic-assisted gallbladder removal while Dr Pattharaporn Phetphosri operated remotely from Chengdu using a high-speed, real-time communications network. This milestone highlights Thailand’s drive to adopt advanced medical technology, with implications for healthcare in Phuket and nationwide.

Impact on Healthcare Access and Efficiency

Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat said tele-robotic surgery could improve efficiency and reduce waiting times for Thai patients. The technology is expected to increase access to specialised treatment, eliminating the need for patients to travel abroad for expert care.

Ministry officials noted that gallbladder stone disease is widespread in Thailand. The successful robotic-assisted cholecystectomy may help address inequalities in specialist care, particularly in remote or underserved regions.

The operation was overseen by the Department of Medical Services, with local teams in Bangkok providing on-site support throughout the procedure.
