Thailand recorded 154 deaths and 705 injuries from 755 road accidents nationwide during the first four days of the Songkran Seven Days of Danger campaign, according to figures released on April 15. The annual safety initiative, which runs from April 10 to 16, aims to reduce traffic fatalities during the holiday period, with Phuket included in the nationwide enforcement efforts.
Regional Disparities and Daily Trends
Lampang province reported the highest number of accidents, with 33 incidents and 34 injuries, while Bangkok saw the most fatalities, recording eight deaths. On April 13 alone, authorities documented 237 accidents, 227 injuries, and 51 deaths across the country.
Chumphon and Chiang Rai each reported 12 accidents on April 13, with Chumphon also leading in injuries that day with 13. Pathum Thani and Loei each recorded four deaths, the highest single-day provincial tolls for fatalities.
Causes, Patterns, and Year-on-Year Comparison
Speeding was cited as the leading cause of accidents, accounting for 41.77% of incidents, while drunk driving was responsible for 27.43%. Motorcycles were involved in 70.93% of crashes, with most accidents occurring on straight routes and local roads within villages and subdistricts.
The peak accident period was between 3:01 PM and 6:00 PM, and victims were predominantly in the 20–29 and 30–39 age groups, making up 17.82% of casualties. Compared to the same four-day period in 2025, accidents decreased by about 25% and injuries by 30%, but fatalities rose by 16, marking an 11–12% increase. Twenty-two provinces reported no fatalities during the campaign’s first four days.
