Thailand warns of flash floods as October downpours approach Phuket

The Thai Meteorological Department has warned of possible flash floods, river overflows and mudslides as a new storm system is forecast to bring widespread heavy rain across Thailand from 5 to 10 October 2026, including Phuket.

In an advisory issued at 17:00 on 29 September 2026, the department said residents in vulnerable areas should remain alert to hazards caused by persistent and accumulated rainfall. These areas include foothill slopes, locations near waterways and low-lying plains.

The department said the weakening south-westerly monsoon had temporarily reduced rainfall in upper Thailand, but isolated heavy rain was continuing in parts of the North. Scattered thundershowers were also affecting the South.

The southern west coast, including Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Trang and Satun, was forecast to have rain covering 60% of the area, with isolated heavy rain. The department also warned that rainfall could trigger sudden flooding, waterlogging, riverbank overflows, forest run-off and landslides.

Marine conditions in the Andaman Sea had moderated, but the Thai Meteorological Department advised all seafarers to exercise caution and avoid storm cells. Waves were forecast at 1–2 metres north of Phang Nga and about 1 metre south of Phuket, with waves exceeding 2 metres during thundershowers.
