Thailand weather warning flags torrential rain, 3-meter Andaman waves — confirmed details at this stage for Phuket readers.

Thailand weather warning flags torrential rain, 3-meter Andaman waves

Thailand’s Meteorological Department issued Weather Warning No. 5 at 5am on May 15, warning of heavy to very heavy rain across four regions through May 18, with Phuket included in the area facing stronger seas in the upper Andaman. The alert covers the North, Central, East and South, where accumulated rainfall may trigger flash floods and forest runoff, especially along foothills, waterways and low-lying ground.

The department said the worsening conditions are being driven by a strong low-pressure cell over the lower Bay of Bengal moving toward the upper Bay of Bengal, alongside a strengthening southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

Upper Andaman seas near Phuket expected to turn rough

From May 15-18, waves in the upper Andaman from Phuket northward are forecast at 2-3 meters, rising above 3 meters in thundershowers. In the lower Andaman from Krabi southward, and in the upper Gulf of Thailand, waves are expected at about 2 meters, with higher seas above 2 meters in storm areas.

Boat operators were told to navigate with caution and avoid thunderstorm zones. Small boats in the upper Andaman were advised to remain ashore during the warning period.

The department said its forecasts can be checked at www.tmd.go.th or by calling 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182. The next warning was scheduled for 5pm on May 15.
