TMD tracks four Pacific storms as Phuket region faces rough Andaman seas
None of the four systems is forecast to enter Thailand, but the TMD expects 2-3 metre waves in the upper Andaman Sea and very heavy rain along the western coast of the South.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) is tracking four western Pacific storms, none of which is forecast to enter Thailand, while warning of rough seas in the Andaman region that includes Phuket.
The systems are named Narra, Gaenari, Saudel and Atsani. The TMD said it was monitoring them and assessing whether they could affect Thailand or the country's weather. Travellers were advised to check conditions before setting out.
Tropical Storm Narra, currently over the Gulf of Tonkin, is forecast to make landfall in southern Guangxi, China, between 25 and 26 August 2026. It is not expected to move into Thailand, although the TMD said it could indirectly affect local weather.
A weak monsoon trough extends across Myanmar and upper Laos towards Narra, while a rather strong southwest monsoon covers the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand. Isolated thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast in the North, upper Northeast and East.
From 27 to 29 August, rain is expected to increase across upper Thailand, with isolated heavy falls in the North, Northeast and along the eastern coast of the South. Isolated very heavy rain is forecast in the western part of the Central region, the East and along the western coast of the South, where Phuket is located.
Rain is expected to increase again in the North and Northeast from 30 to 31 August, with isolated heavy to very heavy falls.
Waves in the upper Andaman Sea are forecast at 2-3 metres throughout the period and may exceed 3 metres during thunderstorms. Waves in the upper Gulf of Thailand will be about 2 metres and may exceed that height in thundershowers.
