Tourists criticized after exposing themselves from Phuket tuk tuk

Foreign tourists were criticized after exposing themselves from a tuk tuk in Patong, Phuket, in images posted online yesterday, April 27. Photos shared by the Phuket Times Facebook page showed several foreigners standing in the vehicle, facing traffic behind them and pulling down their trousers.

Images spark calls for police action

The Facebook page caption described the group as taking turns baring their buttocks to motorists following the tuk tuk. The identities and nationalities of those involved were not disclosed, and the original source of the images was not specified.

The post drew criticism online, with many users calling for police action. Some commenters also questioned enforcement, saying officials were not doing enough to control inappropriate tourist behaviour.

Law sets 5,000-baht fine for public indecency

Under Section 388 of Thailand’s Criminal Law, public indecency, including exposing oneself, carries a fine of up to 5,000 baht. No police action was reported in the source material linked to the images.

The incident follows other reported cases involving misconduct on tuk tuks in Phuket. In February, a French couple was deported and blacklisted after a viral video showed them engaging in sexual activity during a ride, and both were also fined.

In June last year, a tuk tuk driver shared footage of a foreign couple after they ignored his warnings about their behaviour. The same driver had earlier posted another video in January last year showing similar indecent conduct despite repeated warnings to passengers.

In many such cases, no legal action has been reported, sometimes because witnesses do not file complaints or because those involved leave the country before proceedings can take place.
