Two German tourists died after being struck by a pickup truck at a pedestrian crossing in Khao Lak, Phang Nga, on Friday night, with the driver fleeing the scene, police said.

The crash happened at about 9.45pm on Phetkasem Road, heading towards Thai Mueang, at the crossing in front of the Orchid Khao Lak shop in Khuekkhak, Takua Pa district. The victims were a 64-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman.

Police said a white Mazda BT-50 pickup with Bangkok registration plates hit both tourists before continuing towards Thai Mueang. The driver had not been identified at the time of the report.

When officers arrived, the woman was receiving emergency treatment at the scene. The man had been taken to Khao Lak Medical Center, where medical staff were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead at about 10.32pm. Police were notified at about 11.04pm that the woman had also died at the medical centre.

Officers photographed and mapped the scene and questioned nearby residents, who reported seeing the pickup strike the tourists before leaving. Post-mortem examinations were conducted in conjunction with the duty physician, and the deaths were registered as inquest cases.

Police are investigating the case as driving negligently on a roadway causing the death of another person, among other possible offences. The investigation is continuing under Khao Lak Police Station.

Police said the tourists had been staying at Le Menara Khao Lak Resort in Bang Muang, Takua Pa district, from Sept 30 to Oct 9. Their names have not been released pending confirmation that their next of kin have been notified.
