Underwater sculptures installed at Racha Yai

Underwater sculptures were installed off Racha Yai island near Phuket on 17 April 2026 as part of a marine conservation initiative. The project placed a series of artificial reef structures on the seafloor to encourage coral growth and support local marine life. Organisers said the installation aims to boost eco-tourism in the region while providing new habitats for fish and invertebrates.

Project Details and Environmental Goals

The sculptures, created from marine-grade concrete, were deployed at depths ranging from 5 to 12 metres. Each piece was designed to withstand strong currents and provide shelter for juvenile fish, according to project engineers.

Local dive operators collaborated with marine biologists to select the installation site, which had previously suffered coral loss. Officials said the structures cover an area of approximately 300 square metres.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to restore damaged reefs around Phuket and the Andaman Sea. Organisers plan to monitor coral colonisation and fish populations at the site over the coming years.
