A 19-year-old BMW driver without a licence has been charged after a transwoman was fatally struck on Pathak Road in Chalong, Phuket, at about 2.30am on April 25. The victim, Auttachai Deeprom, was hit while retrieving a dropped mobile phone outside an entertainment venue and later died in hospital, according to reports.
The black BMW 330e M Sport was being driven by Archie Barrett, and the case is being handled by Chalong Police Station.
CCTV footage shows moments before impact
CCTV footage showed Auttachai crossing the road with friends when she dropped her phone. She went back to collect it, avoided one speeding vehicle, and was then hit by another car as she walked back toward the roadside.
Police have charged Barrett with driving without a licence and reckless driving causing death. The court will decide the final penalty.
Family seeks compensation after victim's death
Friends said they feared a lack of accountability in the case and were seeking justice and compensation for Auttachai’s family. They said she had run a salon in Phuket for more than 10 years and was the main provider for relatives in Nakhon Phanom province.
The BMW was insured under the Compulsory Motor Vehicle Insurance Act. Reports said the family is expected to receive an initial compensation payment of 1 million baht.
Police plan to arrange a meeting between the driver and the victim’s family to discuss additional compensation.
