Thailand has reported at least 216 deaths and 1,073 injuries from 1,108 road accidents nationwide during the first six days of the Songkran Seven Days of Danger Road campaign, which runs from April 10 to 16, 2026, according to figures released by The Phuket Express on April 16. However, earlier reports from other sources cited slightly lower figures: one report put the death toll at 191 with 911 injuries after five days, while another source tallied 95 deaths after three days, and 71 deaths after two days. On the first day alone, at least 20 fatalities were reported.

Provincial Trends and Risk Factors

Phrae province reportedly recorded the highest number of accidents, with 47 cases and 49 injuries over the six-day period, while Bangkok saw the most fatalities, with 19 deaths. On April 15, the campaign’s sixth day, authorities documented 156 accidents resulting in 161 injuries and 23 deaths nationwide. Chiang Rai led that day with 10 accidents, 11 injuries, and three fatalities.

Speeding was identified as the leading cause of incidents, accounting for an estimated 38.54% of all crashes, followed by drunk driving at 28.13%. Motorcycles were involved in approximately 72.88% of reported accidents, with most incidents occurring on straight routes and local village roads. The Songkran Seven Days of Danger campaign, which includes Phuket among the monitored provinces, aims to reduce road casualties during the Thai New Year holiday.
