Thailand’s extended visa-free entry policy, trialed to boost tourism, faces possible rollback after multiple agencies raised concerns during the Global Sustainable Tourism Conference 2026 (GSTC 2026) in Phuket on April 23. Officials confirmed a formal review is underway, with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the security sector examining the measure’s appropriateness following reported problems.

Policy Review and Potential Changes

The review will assess how the visa-free scheme has functioned in practice, focusing on enforcement mechanisms to address inappropriate behaviour and prevent issues linked to “undesirable tourists.” Authorities are considering abolishing the 60-day visa-free entry for all countries and reverting to country-specific visa arrangements.

New visa options tailored to different markets are also under discussion. Any changes to the policy must receive Cabinet approval, as the original measure was passed at that level.

Tax Exemption Claim Triggers Investigation

A separate investigation was launched after expatriate Simon Leeds claimed online he could purchase a B56 million property near Bang Tao Beach and remain in Thailand while paying “0% tax” on global income under a “wealthy global citizenship” arrangement. The April 19 post drew criticism from other foreigners, who questioned the legality of the claim.

Mr Surasak stated that the matter is now under official review, including checks on the type of visa used and supporting documentation. He emphasized that residing in Thailand without paying taxes is illegal and that relevant agencies, including the Phuket Governor’s office, are examining the case.
