Wichit police bring 42 youths under control and seize 21 motorcycles

Police in Wichit brought 42 youths described as at risk under control and seized 21 motorcycles during an overnight operation on 8 October, ahead of Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival.

The operation began at about 1.30am and targeted reported gathering points on Sakdidech-Bo Rae Road and the road alongside Khlong Saphan Hin. Police said residents had repeatedly complained about late-night gatherings, firecracker use and street racing in the area.

Officers focused on groups of youths under 18 gathering after 10pm and checked vehicles for traffic and vehicle-law violations, according to police.

Phuket Provincial Police commander Pol Maj Gen Surachai Suksai announced the results later that day at Wichit Police Station. Police said parents or guardians had been summoned for briefings on relevant laws and proceedings under the Child Protection Act 2003. Risk profiles of the youths were also recorded through an online form.

Wichit police have increased manpower, tightened social-order enforcement and begun an ongoing review of CCTV footage at vulnerable locations, Pol Maj Gen Surachai said. The measures are intended to prevent similar incidents and reassure residents before the Vegetarian Festival, scheduled for 10 to 18 October.
