Wichit police seize 14 motorbikes in street-racing crackdown

Wichit police seized 14 motorbikes and recorded the details of 42 youths under 18 during an operation targeting suspected street racing and public disturbances in Phuket on 8 October 2026.

The operation began at about 1:30am after residents reported groups of teenagers gathering at night, revving motorcycle engines and setting off fireworks and firecrackers. Wichit police worked with administrative officials and police volunteers in two areas identified as high risk: Sakdidet–Bo Rae Road and the road beside the Bang Yai canal at Saphan Hin.

Officers checked motorcycles for illegal modifications and equipment violations while monitoring groups gathered in the early hours. Police said the operation followed reports on social media about teenagers gathering along Bo Rae–Khlong Mudong Road and causing a public nuisance.

Police had previously taken legal action against four youths on 6 October 2026 after seizing fireworks, ignition equipment and two handheld firearms made to discharge fireworks at a directed target. The youths faced charges including unauthorised use of fireworks, causing excessive noise or a public nuisance, and breaches of public-health laws concerning public nuisances. Their guardians were also dealt with under the Child Protection Act 2003.

A further seven youths were dealt with on 7 October 2026 after police seized additional fireworks and firecrackers during intensified enforcement in the area during the Vegetarian Festival.

Police said guardians of the 42 youths encountered in the latest operation were invited to receive briefings on relevant laws and measures intended to prevent risky behaviour. Authorities said they would continue monitoring high-risk areas and take legal action where appropriate to prevent illegal street racing, reduce accident risks and limit disturbances to residents.
